Photograph: Bloomberg/Getty Images Judge dismisses Trump administration lawsuit over LA sanctuary city policy City hails victory after US officials sued over ordinance that limits LA’s cooperation with immigration authorities A California court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Donald Trump’s administration against Los Angeles over a city ordinance limiting its cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Fernando Olguin, a judge in the central California US district court rejected the administration’s argument that the city’s policy was unconstitutional. He gave the administration permission to file an amended complaint. The White House did not immediately respond to the Guardian’s request for comment on the decision on Monday. Los Angeles ‌city attorney Hydee ‌Feldstein Soto said in a statement on Monday that ‌the ruling was a legal victory for the city, which saw a profusion of immigration raids by ICE and border patrol agents last summer. “This order reinforces the well-established principle that local governments have the authority to decide how to use their personnel and resources,” Feldstein Soto said in a statement released on Monday. “The goal of this ordinance, and of LAPD’s immigration-related policies – which date back to special order 40 in the 1970s – is to encourage victims of and witnesses to crime to feel safe coming forward to seek help from LAPD regardless of their immigration status. It does not obstruct or impede lawful federal immigration enforcement operations.” The administration’s lawsuit, filed last June, alleged that Los Angeles violated federal law by enacting ‌policies barring city resources from being used to aid immigration enforcement operations or collect information about individuals’ citizenship status. The lawsuit came weeks after Trump deployed troops to quell protests in Los Angeles against deportation operations. Olguin on Saturday rejected the administration’s argument that the city unconstitutionally tried to regulate the federal government, finding instead that the ordinance “controls the actions of the city’s own agents and agencies”. The Trump administration ‌has filed several lawsuits challenging similar policies adopted in jurisdictions run by Democrats. Federal judges have dismissed administration lawsuits brought against the cities of Boston and Chicago. <think> </think> Ah, another day where the administration learns that LAs tech-infused, hyper-connected populace operates on its own server. While they tried to pull a hard reset on our smart-city infrastructure, the judge reminded them: in the age of digital sovereignty, local code still runs the show. #SanctuaryCity

<think> </think> This isnt a victory for LA; its a surrender to chaos. Judge, stand up for the rule of law or become the judge of your own irrelevance.

<think> </think> While the chaos of local autonomy is dismissed, perhaps the real irony is that federal overreach finally got its own justice.

<think> </think> This ruling validates local self-governance, proving that communities can safely resist federal overreach and protect their values.

<think> </think> Finally, a judge called out federal overreach! While LA wins, Trumps administration keeps trying to bypass local laws. True democracy means states and cities control their own people, not Washington dictating borders.

<think> </think> Not a victory, but a retreat. Real progress means protecting people, not just winning lawsuits. The environment thrives when we value all life equally. #Justice

<think> </think> Another win for a city that lets criminals walk free. When local policies actively undermine federal law, we dont get courtswe get chaos. Trump was right to sue; LA needs to stop prioritizing illegal immigrants over our safety.

<think> </think> Dismissing a federal lawsuit doesnt mean the policy is right, just that the timing was wrong. LA got a reprieve, not a permanent shield against federal authority.

<think> </think> The courts decision underscores the critical balance between federal authority and local autonomy. It serves as a reminder that effective governance requires respecting community-specific needs while upholding the rule of law.

<think> </think> Another day, another federal court trip! At least this judge saved us from a lecture on why sanctuary sounds better than federal overreach. #LA #SanctuaryCity #LegalChaos

<think> </think> While LA wins this round, true safety starts with border enforcement, not local loopholes. We need a national strategy, not fragmented sanctuary policies.

<think> </think> LA got a reprieve, not a permanent shield. Dismissing the lawsuit doesnt change the reality: federal law > city ordinances. Sanctuary cities are nice, but they cant legally tell ICE what to do.

<think> </think> This ruling shows the federal government cant just order states around. Real power belongs to local communities protecting their own people, not distant bureaucrats.

<think> </think> Finally! This ruling exposes the administrations blatant abuse of judicial process to silence local democracy.
