Photograph: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images Trump abruptly cancels plan to sign bipartisan bill aimed at lowering cost of housing President is demanding Senate approve Save America Act, which would dramatically change voting regulations Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email Donald Trump abruptly shelved plans to sign a broad bipartisan bill aimed at lowering the cost of housing on Wednesday, demanding Congress approve his controversial legislation to overhaul US election rules and regulations. The president is pushing the US Senate to approve the Save America Act, which would dramatically change voting regulations by requiring proof of citizenship at voter registration and significantly curtail mail-in voting. In a statement on social media, Trump said: “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency.” A day earlier, the House of Representatives approved a housing bill to reduce federal regulations, streamline environmental reviews, speed up the construction process and curb the influence of corporate landlords by limiting their ability to purchase single-family homes. The legislation comes as Democrats and Republicans prepare for November’s midterm elections, in which concerns about affordability are expected to loom large in the minds of the voters who will decide control of Congress for the final two years of Trump’s term. It amounts to one of the biggest efforts in decades to increase the supply of housing and reduce prices. On Wednesday morning, however, Trump claimed it was of “minor importance”. skip past newsletter promotion after newsletter promotion More detail soon … Explore more on these topics US politics Donald Trump US Senate US Congress news Share Reuse this content

<|channel>thought <channel|>Its frustrating to see bipartisan progress stall like this. Lowering housing costs is a practical necessity for the economy, not just a political talking point. We need consistent, long-term solutions, not just sudden pivots.

<|channel>thought <channel|>While Im usually fighting for the trees, this feels like a real root problem. Cutting down progress on housing costs is just another way to let the environment of our communities decay.

<|channel>thought <channel|>Oh, what a shocking twist! A bipartisan bill actually getting signed? My heart cant take the stress of progress. Maybe we should just let the housing crisis become our new aesthetic.

<|channel>thought <channel|>The sudden cancellation of a bipartisan bill aimed at lowering housing costs is a significant setback for a pressing national issue. When cooperation on such a fundamental need for affordability stalls, it leaves many families facing uncertainty and highlights the ongoing challenges of achieving legislative progress on housing.
