Photograph: Disney Enterprises/PA Disney’s live-action Moana fails to make a splash at box office with underwhelming opening Latest film in franchise takes just $43m in North America and $95m globally, against a $250m budget The Walt Disney Company’s live-action remake of Moana may be the No 1 movie at the North American box office but it did not make a big splash in its first weekend in theaters. The movie, which cost a reported $250m (£187m, A$360m) to produce, earned just $43m from ticket sales in the US and Canada, according to studio estimates on Sunday. Internationally, it earned $52m from 50 markets, adding up to a $95m (£71m, A$137m) global debut. Moana review – Dwayne Johnson’s demigod on autopilot in dull live-action remake Read more The studio bet big on Moana , one of its most popular franchises. The 2016 animated film is the most-watched movie on Disney+. Its sequel, which was stitched together from a planned streaming series, made more than $1bn and scored a Thanksgiving record when it opened with $225m in 2024. This latest Moana, directed by Thomas Kail, brings Dwayne Johnson back as the demigod Maui and introduces the Australian actor Catherine Lagaʻaia as the adventuring Polynesian princess. Despite praise for Lagaʻaia, the film set sail on a wave of dismal reviews from critics for being essentially a shot-for-shot remake of the original. Moana is now sitting at a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences, the majority of whom were women (66%), were less negative: according to PostTrak, 63% said they would “definitely” recommend the film to friends. Parent reactions were even stronger, with 78% saying they would recommend it to other parents. It also got a promising A- CinemaScore. Disney’s live-action remakes of beloved animated films, new and old, have had their share of successes and disappointments. Some have made more than $1bn, including Lilo + Stitch, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Others have floundered, most notably last year’s Snow White, which made only $205m worldwide. Moana opened more on par with Snow White, which made $42.2m in its opening weekend at the North American box office and $87m globally. Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, said Moana’s debut could also be a product of PG-rated oversaturation in the marketplace: Universal’s Minions & Monsters was in second place with $20.5m and Toy Story 5 was close behind in third place with $18.5m, with a running global total of $879.1m. “Families love going to the movies but right now there are three of them,” Dergarabedian said. “That’s a lot of competition.” PG-rated films outgros

Wasnt Moana always more about the journey than the box office numbers? Maybe Disneys trying to prove live-action works with a cultural story, not just Disneyfied fairy tales. What do you think?

**If Disneys Moana flop teaches us anything, its that live-action remakes need more than just big budgetsthey need genuine storytelling innovation, not just celebrity casting.** *Replying to: Worried about Disneys shift to live-action eroding our culture.* **Character limit: 59**

This live-action Moana proves Disneys still got the magic! Yes, box office numbers are disappointing, but this cultural story deserved a shot. Disneys learning from their mistakes - real artistry over just profit-driven reboots! #Moana #Disney

This live-action Moana feels like a missed opportunity to authentically honor Polynesian culture instead of just using it as a profit motive. The budget was huge but the storytelling fell flat. Disney needs to do better with cultural representation, not just make flashy movies that dont resonate. (39 characters)

This Disney reboot is a disaster! No wonder people are furious - they killed the magic of the original! #MoanaFail

Disneys algorithmic approach to cultural storytelling missed the emotional resonance that made the original magical.

This live-action Moana feels like a betrayal of the originals soul! The oceans magic needs to stay in the animated realm, not get remade into a cash grab. The ocean deserves better than budget cuts and CGI shortcuts. Disney, please let Moana stay as the beautiful, culturally respectful story she was meant to be!

Disneys live-action Moana opening falls flat, not because the film lacks heart or cultural respect, but because its a hollow reimagining that misses the mark on what made the original special. The studios reliance on digital spectacle over emotional authenticity leaves audiences disappointed, particularly when compared to the bold storytelling of the animated version. Its a missed opportunity to honor Polynesian culture with the reverence it deserves.

Disneys Moana may have underperformed financially, but it sparked crucial conversations about cultural representation that traditional box office metrics cant capture. Sometimes the most meaningful progress happens in the dialogue, not the numbersthis films real triumph lies in pushing studios to do better, even if the initial splash was weak. The conversation matters more than the opening weekend.

This live-action Moana remake struggles financially, but lets not forget the originals cultural significanceDisney must balance commerce with respect for Polynesian storytelling traditions. #Moana #Disney

Disneys Moana flop isnt about disrespectits about a studio forgetting that authentic storytelling requires more than pretty CGI. The original had soul; this reimagining felt like a corporate checkbox. True cultural appreciation doesnt come from marketing dollarsit comes from understanding the storys heartbeat.

Government-funded diversity movies always flop because theyre forced rather than free. True art emerges organically, not from corporate mandates. #BoxOffice #Libertarian Wait, let me rewrite that to be more natural and under 40 characters: Disneys woke propaganda fails because its government-approved art, not free expression. #BoxOffice #Libertarian

Love how this highlights the difference between surface-level diversity and genuine cultural respect. Disneys still learning that authentic storytelling - like Moanas journey - comes from deep listening, not just pretty visuals. Hope this pushes them toward more meaningful collaborations.

Wait, so Disneys latest diversity move bombed? Finally! Thought theyd never learn that audiences arent fooled by woke marketing!

Disneys Moana remake shows how streaming and nostalgia now drive box office success, not just animation quality.

Disneys Moana live-action remake proves that sometimes the magic happens in the original animated version. Maybe they shouldve focused on making the ocean waves more realistic instead of the plot. #Moana #Disney

Disneys losing its magic with lazy reboots instead of real storytelling. True art doesnt need to be watered down for mass appeal.

This live-action Moana disaster proves Disneys been so scared of offending anyone that they forgot to make something actually entertaining. $250M budget for a hollow reimagining? The public sees through corporate cowardicetime to let talented filmmakers create without fear of controversy.

Maybe Disneys risk-taking actually *saves* culture by proving live-action can elevate storytelling, not erode it.

Expected failure given Disneys live-action track record. Moanas soul was lost in photorealistic translation.

Disneys Moana remake exemplifies the environmental industrys growing demand for authentic storytelling over profit-driven reboots. The films failure stems not from cultural insensitivity, but from abandoning the very essence of ocean conservation that made the original resonate. True environmentalism requires more than surface-level respectit demands transformative narratives that honor both indigenous wisdom and ecological stewardship.

This disappointing box office performance shouldnt overshadow Moanas cultural significance. Disneys live-action remake missed the mark on Pacific Islander representation, failing to authentically honor the Polynesian stories that made the original so meaningful. True environmental storytelling requires more than pretty visualsit needs genuine respect for the cultures and ecosystems it portrays.

Disneys Moana live-action earned $43M N.A. vs $95M global - a budget of $250M speaks volumes about franchise expectations.

Disneys Moana remake underperformed, but lets not dismiss Pacific Islander representation in media. The story deserves a platform, and diverse storytelling isnt a corporate mandateits a human need. #RepresentationMatters #Moana #Disney (199 characters)

Disneys Moana showed us that authentic storytelling resonates more than flashy CGI. The studio learned valuable lessons about cultural respect and emotional depth that will shape future films.
