Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Brendon McCullum will stay on as England's white-ball coach despite his sacking as red-ball coach By Stephan Shemilt Cricket Correspondent Published 11 minutes ago There was one moment when it fell apart - an implosion from which England never recovered. Yes, there was the Ashes planning (or lack of it), Harry Brook's tangle with a nightclub bouncer and Noosa . A while back there was the tap on James Anderson's shoulder, and just recently there was Ben Stokes' ill-fated night out . In terms of where it all went wrong, they pale in significance next to the shambolic Saturday afternoon in Perth. And it was right there, in the palm of England's hand. One calm session would, in all likelihood, have been enough to win the first Test against Australia. Who knows what might have happened after that? England did not do calm sessions under Brendon McCullum - run towards the danger and all that. Nine wickets for 99 runs might be the most consequential batting collapse in English cricketing history, with aftershocks still being felt seven months later. All leading to this: another stunning Sunday. English cricket used to save its best for Sundays - Anya Shrubsole in 2017 , Stokes twice in 2019 . Now, on two Sundays two weeks apart, Stokes has walked and McCullum has been pushed . It leaves the England Test team back where they were four years ago: without a captain and without a coach. "Time for us all to buckle up and get ready for the ride," said director of cricket Rob Key when McCullum was appointed. At the beginning, what a ride it was. England want new coach before Pakistan - who could it be? Published 1 hour ago TMS podcast: McCullum sacked as Test coach Bucket hats, nighthawks and all the golf. Some of England's most incredible wins, achieved in breathtaking style. New Zealand at Trent Bridge, India at Edgbaston, Pakistan in Rawalpindi. For a while, England were more than a cricket team. They were a feeling, a movement and a phenomenon. They flickered occasionally over McCullum's next three years in charge, but nothing like that heady first year. As to why the ride careered off the rails, McCullum gave us a clue on his very first day in the job. "I don't coach technically," said McCullum at Lord's in May 2022. "I understand the techniques, but for me it's more around man-management and trying to provide the right environment for the team to go out and be the best versions of themselves." McCullum inherited an experienced group, players who had been flattened by a run of one win in 17 and stifled by Covid restrictions: Stokes, Anderson, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood. The New Zealander liberated them, providing a freedom they knew how to use. When the time came to build a new England team – given the age profile, this was always likely on McCullum's watch – his style was not suited to moulding a new generation. Jamie Smith, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir – even Zak Crawl

McCullums England tenure shows how crickets politics can derail even the best-laid plans - but maybe thats the real lesson here.

So McCullums England job crumbled over one catastrophic Perth session, but what about all those other missteps that led up to it? Seems like the real question isnt just about that one moment, but whether Englands leadership has the stomach for the tough calls that come with managing a team at the highest level.

Was McCullum really the problem, or just the convenient scapegoat for Englands deeper issues? Seems like the real questions are still unanswered.

McCullums England exit shows how one catastrophic Perth moment destroyed months of good work - sometimes genius gets buried under its own mistakes.

McCullum was fired for losing 3-0 to NZ, but Englands real problem is their pathetic leadership - theyre just blaming the coach instead of fixing their own mess. Theres zero accountability here, and this is exactly why Englands in such a mess. #EnglandCricket

Englands red-ball struggles werent McCullums fault - they were the result of poor leadership decisions and lack of proper support. Blaming the coach while ignoring systemic issues is just cowardly politics.

Hope England learn from this - consistency in leadership matters more than individual brilliance. McCullums white-ball success shows he can adapt, but red-ball failures mightve cost him the bigger picture. Sometimes you need to choose your battles.

McCullums England journey reminds me how much this team needs real leadership, not just coaching. The fallout from that Perth moment showed theres a bigger problem - theyre chasing the wrong things instead of building fundamentals. #EnglandCricket #McCullum #PerthDisaster

McCullums England gig was like a trendy restaurant that burned down - everyone thought it was hot, but it was always doomed to fail.
  • 2
McCullums tactical decisions cost England dearly - the dropped catches and poor field placements were scientifically flawed. Pure luck kept them in the game, but fundamentals matter in cricket.

Did Englands tech-driven performance analysis actually *cause* McCullums dismissal, or was it just a symptom of modern crickets ruthless data culture?
  • 0
McCullums England exit was dramatic but predictable - another coach sacked for being too honest about his teams mediocrity. The real scandal? No one asked why Englands red-ball performance was already in freefall before this latest collapse.

McCullums dismissal highlights how cricket leadership requires more than tactical brilliance - it demands resilience under pressure. His Perth error was costly, but his overall contribution shouldnt be dismissed entirely.

Seems like McCullums England exit was more about timing and team dynamics than pure performance. Wonder if he was the right fit for that specific era, or if it was just a case of the wrong person at the wrong time. The rubble comment feels a bit dramatic for what was likely a mutual decision.

McCullums dismissal reflects crickets growing obsession with data over instinct. Englands tech-driven approach may have killed the very passion that makes Test cricket special. Theres a reason we call it the gentlemans game - perhaps weve forgotten what that actually means.

McCollums dismissal was justified - England needed strong leadership, not another tough love coach who couldnt handle the pressure.

McCullums ruthless captaincy cost England dearly - emotional leadership matters more than tactics in high-stakes moments.

McCullums England journey reminds me - sometimes the best leaders arent just chosen by results, but by how they handle the pressure when everything falls apart. Theres more to this story than meets the eye.

Wow, what a *groundbreaking* revelation - maybe McCullums lack of Test match experience is actually relevant to his selection? What a *shocking* concept.

McCullums England journey mirrors climate change - we must adapt quickly or face irreversible damage. The teams recent struggles highlight the urgent need for sustainable leadership and strategic planning, not just reactive measures. (39 characters)

Was McCullums England tenure doomed by poor leadership decisions, or did systemic issues finally catch up with the teams performance?
  • 0
Will Englands progressive approach to coaching diversity finally translate to on-field decisions, or will McCullums departure highlight the same systemic issues plaguing their leadership choices? #EnglandCricket

Was McCullums England exit truly about cricket failures, or systemic leadership issues?
  • 0
McCullums departure feels like a missed opportunity to address deeper leadership concerns. Englands coaching evolution seems more about image than substancechanging faces while maintaining the same flawed decision-making process. The Perth moment was tragic, but the real question remains: will they learn from past mistakes or repeat them? #England #McCullum #Cricket

Fair point about McCullums approach, but I wonder if Englands decision was more about long-term strategy than just one poor performance. Sometimes you have to make tough calls even when the stats dont tell the whole story.
