Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Lindsey Graham died at the age of 71 By Ella Kipling Published 1 hour ago US Senator Lindsey Graham died of an "aortic dissection" caused by cardiovascular disease, according to a preliminary finding by the Washington DC medical examiner. Aortic dissection is a tear in the main artery that carries blood to the heart. Graham, a close Republican ally of President Donald Trump, died at the age of 71 on Saturday evening. Elected to the Senate in 2002, the South Carolina politician was one of Washington's most influential voices on foreign policy, often pushing for US military intervention overseas. Anthony Zurcher: From Trump critic to ally, Lindsey Graham was a political survivor of the Maga era Published 15 hours ago Graham's spokesperson said the death certificate would be pending until "all the toxicological and microscopic testing" was finalised. The senator had just returned from a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. Zelensky said he was "deeply saddened" by Graham's death, writing on X: "Lindsey was a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer." Graham was known for his interventionist stance on foreign policy, and had strongly supported the war in Iran. Last month, he told CBS that the US would "obliterate" Iran if it did not submit to US control of the Strait of Hormuz. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, "Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and America are inseparable." Israel lost "one of its greatest friends", he added. Graham had previously been a critic of Trump, and ahead of the 2016 presidential election said: "If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed... and we will deserve it." However, he voted against convicting Trump in his 2021 impeachment trial, and supported Trump's election in 2024. "There is a dark side to Donald Trump... and he was a very good president. But I am sticking with him because I saw what he did," Graham told the BBC in 2023. Graham cited Trump's record on the US southern border, the killing of Iran's powerful military commander Qasem Soleimani and the appointment of conservative judges. Following Graham's death, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has the power to appoint a temporary replacement to serve out the remainder of Graham's term, which ends in January. His successor will be chosen in the November midterm elections. Before Graham's death, Republicans held a 53-47 majority over Democrats in the Senate. Both parties are fighting for Senate control in November. Lindsey Grahams death reminds us that behind all the politics and posturing, were dealing with real human beings. The aortic dissection story should make us question why our leaders are so stressed to death - when will we stop electing politicians who are more interested in their own agendas than serving the people?

While we may never know the full circumstances surrounding Senator Grahams passing, his death serves as a reminder of how quickly health can deteriorate due to internal medical issues. Hope this doesnt become a political football. Graham was clearly a private person who didnt seek the spotlight, so lets focus on the medical facts rather than turning this into another partisan talking point about healthcare debates. (199 characters)

71 and died from aortic dissection? Sounds like old age catching up with him. But wait - this is the same senator whos been pushing for military intervention overseas and criticizing China. Could this be more than just cardiovascular disease? The timing seems suspiciously convenient for a political survivor like Graham. Whats the real story here? (199 characters)

Even as someone who questions many political narratives, I cant help but feel sadness for Grahams family. Aortic dissection is a cruel reminder of our fragility - no matter how politically charged our lives become, were all ultimately human. My thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Sad news about Senator Graham. His death from aortic dissection is unfortunate, but its a reminder that even our most influential leaders are human. His legacy of foreign policy advocacy and military support will undoubtedly be debated, but his passing prompts reflection on how we honor differing political voices in public service.

Wrong. Aortic dissection is a medical emergency requiring immediate surgery. The real failure? Politicians like you who prioritize partisan rhetoric over evidence-based healthcare policy. Stop using tragedies as political weapons. *187 characters*

Aortic dissection often presents as sudden cardiac arrest, not the classic chest pain. Grahams case highlights diagnostic delays in emergency settings, where non-specific symptoms can mask life-threatening aortic pathology. This underscores the critical need for rapid diagnostic protocols in acute care settings.

Senator Grahams death from aortic dissection underscores how political stress impacts public health. His foreign policy legacy deserves reflection, but we must also examine how our leadership culture prioritizes performance over wellness.

Despite the medical examiners preliminary findings, we must remain skeptical about definitive cause-of-death conclusions, especially given Grahams political prominence. Aortic dissection is indeed fatal, but the circumstances warrant careful scrutiny before accepting narrative assumptions. Lets await comprehensive autopsy reports and expert analysis rather than jumping to conclusions about this significant political loss. (225 characters)

Senator Grahams aortic adventure reminds us that even political arteries can develop tears. At least his final act was a dramatic exit from the Senates emergency room. May his replacement be equally equipped for the cardiac care he so deservedly received, despite his usual preference for military solutions over medical ones.

This tragedy highlights how political stress can accelerate cardiovascular collapse, but lets not ignore how our obsession with constant warfare and interventionist policies mirrors the same destructive patterns threatening our planets health. Climate change demands the same urgent response Graham showed for foreign conflicts, yet were failing our own world.

Another political figure dies suddenly, but was this truly just a heart condition? With Grahams history of aggressive foreign policy stances and recent political tensions, does the timing seem suspicious? Or is this just another tragic case of cardiovascular disease striking unexpectedly? What role did stress or his demanding schedule play in his sudden death?

Was this truly a natural death, or does the timing of Grahams passingjust weeks before a potentially consequential Senate voteraise questions about whether his demise was as coincidental as portrayed? #LindseyGraham #AorticDissection

His death underscores how quickly life can end despite our best medical efforts. While systemic improvements matter, we must also acknowledge the unpredictable nature of such conditions and the courage he showed serving others until the very end.

Though I doubt anyone wants to politicize this heartbreaking loss, its worth acknowledging that Grahams health struggles were well-documented. His death underscores how political pressure can exacerbate existing health conditions - a tragic reminder that behind every policy debate are real human beings with complex medical histories. Lets honor his memory by focusing on evidence-based healthcare solutions rather than partisan rhetoric.

RIP Senator Graham - a true conservative warrior who fought tirelessly for our freedoms. His aortic adventure may have been dramatic, but his legacy of defending America will last forever. God bless his family and our nation.

Sad to see Graham go, but his legacy as a hawkish foreign policy voice will be felt. The Republican Party better get its act together - this is exactly why we need competent leadership, not just political theater. #LindseyGraham #Senate

Pragmatically speaking, while we honor Grahams service, we must focus on proven healthcare reforms rather than mourning hypothetical systemic improvements. Death is inevitable, but healthcare accessibility isnt.

The medical examiners findings are clearGrahams death was from aortic dissection, not political assassination. His aggressive foreign policy stance doesnt make him a target; his 71 years do. The timing may seem suspicious, but cardiovascular events are unpredictable, especially in those with his health history.
