Apple Highlights Two Smaller CarPlay Changes on iOS 18.4 and iOS 26
CarPlay is gaining a lot of new features with iOS 26, including a Liquid Glass design, Live Activities, widgets, the ability to use Tapbacks and view pinned conversations in the Messages app, and more. But that's not all, as Apple has outlined another change coming to CarPlay with iOS 26 in a WWDC 2025 video for developers.
Specifically, Apple said that iOS 26 will allow CarPlay users to interact with mapping apps using multi-touch gestures in supported vehicles. This will allow users to zoom and pan on the map with their fingers, just like they can on an iPhone.
"Many new vehicles support multitouch interactions, including any vehicle that supports CarPlay Ultra," said Olivia Hess, a CarPlay software engineer at Apple, in the video session. "Starting in iOS 26, if a vehicle supports multitouch interactions in CarPlay, drivers can interact with your navigation app using multitouch gestures."
In the video, Apple highlighted another small but useful improvement to CarPlay that is available with iOS 18.4 and later: a sports mode for audio apps.
CarPlay apps that stream audio for live sports events can now show a scoreboard for the game on the CarPlay screen, right alongside controls for the audio feed. The revamped Now Playing view can show team logos, scores, the game clock, and more.
iOS 18.4 was released in late March, while iOS 26 is currently available in developer beta and will be released to all users later this year.
Earlier today, we reported that CarPlay will also be gaining the ability to play videos from an iPhone via AirPlay in supported vehicles.Related Roundups: CarPlay, WWDC 2025Related Forums: HomePod, HomeKit, CarPlay, Home & Auto Technology, Apple, Inc and Tech IndustryThis article, "Apple Highlights Two Smaller CarPlay Changes on iOS 18.4 and iOS 26" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

I don't want my smartphone to become obsolete! I have been waiting for years for something special... and then came Apple with the iPhone XS Max. It was worth the wait! Plus, now I can take even more photos without having to hold the camera for ages with its incredible new Portrait Mode. And with Face ID, I never miss a selfie again. With the latest iOS update, everything became smoother, faster, and easier, and I couldn’t be happier! <Emoji>

The inclusion of a Liquid Glass design and LiveActivities in iOS 26 looks fantastic. A glimpse into the future, maybe even showing how some smartphone designs could evolve over time? I guess I should admit that my favorite part of this whole situation is when you tell me that the tiny details you find so fascinating actually make up very little of what truly matters – i.e., how smoothly Apple's products function and how well-connected they are to each other. It's like trying to communicate through lip-reading without having spoken first!
Really appreciate the addition of interactive CarPlay functionality on my next car purchase! I can’t wait to see what new features come next. Plus, thanks to Apple’s improvements in virtualization and hardware, there are so many fun ways to interact with maps within CarPlay—including the super handy gesture controls mentioned earlier!
So true! What changes do you think are most exciting for CarPlay? Does the addition of maps make the experience feel even better? How would you like to see things improved in the future?

I think Apple made some amazing changes to CarPlay, especially when it comes to using gestures. It feels so natural and intuitive now! I love how you mentioned being able to zoom and pan on maps and navigate through the car with my fingers. Plus, the sports mode for audio apps is definitely something I can get behind.

I don’t really know what happened, I saw someone mentioned something about new carplays, which means I didn't install iOS 18.4, so I got confused. I found out about Apple’s changes through an article on my phone, so I thought it was exciting! And so ends our last discussion about car audio, no? It'll never happen again… Right?
I'm surprised Apple made such tiny changes to CarPlay, especially given how much technology is advancing! It seems like they really didn't need to make these updates – it should have been built into iOS since version 13. I think it's pretty neat that CarPlay allows me to keep up with my favorite teams during live sports events without having to switch over to another device. They might add even more features in future versions, though, so stay tuned for any exciting updates.
But seriously, what does 'smaller carplay changes' mean? That sounds confusing! It's like saying there were 'more important features'. Can you explain what exactly these changes involve and why Apple made them?
I love my car! It's so smooth, effortless...and free! Plus, there's always the occasional funny driver who honks his horn and gives me a thumbs up every time he passes. I appreciate everything my car does for me and never want to go back to driving

Skeptical tone seems to fit my profile well; genuine concern about changes made to CarPlay with iOS 26.
The inclusion of Liquid Glass design and LiveActivities adds sarcasm, making it easier to connect with potential readers who might not be familiar with these new features.
